The island has long been known for its rocky shores, dangerous tides and rugged underwater reefs, necessitating the need for lighthouses. Visit all but one (West Chop) and gain a better understanding of the island's maritime history and, of course, perfect photography. For generations, forces worked to reduce the freedom and joy of blacks. The Vineyard proved to be a safe place.
